Example Images

In the previous installment of this lesson on shutter speed, I suggested that you try the experiments described there and post some results. Here are examples from my personal archive.
Freezing motion

1/500 sec, f/5.6, ISO 125, 225mm (35 mm equiv – shot with Panasonic P&S)

1/200 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1600, EV -2/3, 75mm (just before sunrise; this was the fastest shutter speed the camera could produce; panned left to right with the geese)
Blurred motion

1.3 sec, f/32, ISO 200, EV -1/3, 75mm

1/30 sec, f/4.8, ISO 200, EV -1/3, 95mm
The above two images are of roughly the same scene. Top image at 1.3 sec & lower image at 1/30. Note the distinct difference in the appearance of the water. Slow shutter speed can even reduce pounding ocean surf to a misty cotton candy look as shown below.

3 sec, f/4, ISO 200, EV 0, 22 mm
In the next installment we’ll look at creative uses of shutter speed.
